This began as a celebration of the lowercase ‘g’, which is typographically one of the most distinctive letters of the alphabet. Serif typefaces mostly have the looptail, or ‘fish hook’, letter ‘g’, as seen in Fish Eagle Fish, while sans serif typefaces tend to have an open tail (with Gill Sans being one of the notable exceptions). The looptail ‘g’ is particularly receptive to variation, and is a good place to start when trying to identify a typeface. What makes the typographer’s freedom to experiment perhaps easier is that hardly any of us use a looptail 'g' in handwriting, so the letter has no vernacular precedent.

These elements – the typographer’s ‘hand’, the fish hook, the ‘catch’ of successful identification – seemed to fall readily into the visual play of the fish eagle’s extended claw.
